I get this idea after a number of years struggling to find the most mobile ways of surfing the net to find information. Now it seem a trend among users to surf their net outdoors such as in the fast food restaurant, shopping mall or even at the park. Notebook and netbook is a synonyms terms when comes to internet mobility but how about the recently added term which might add to the list of internet mobility which is smart phones!
(my comment is based on my own opinion and not from others)
Notebook:
Notebook or laptops is among the first device which allow users to surf internet off the comfort of their homes or offices, with just a broadband modem (Huawei) and data sim card, users can surf the net anywhere they wanted and desired. The problem with notebook is that its size is still considered bulky where it couldn't easily stored together with your other paperwork in your working bag, this not only apply to the device itself but also its charger. Users still need to carry 2 bags for this purpose and it rated low in internet mobility chart.
Netbook:
Somewhere in 2009, computer manufacturers introduce another device which is half the size of ordinary notebook they called netbook. Netbook is a smaller, lighter and cheaper version of notebook operated with much smaller capacity of processors to save power consumption. Internet usage in netbook is similar to that of notebook where users need a modem and a data sim cards to allow them to connect to internet. Since the size is now much smaller, users can possibly stored their netbook together with their paperwork in their working bag or even if they need 2 bags, at least the other is much smaller. The problem here now is not its size but its speed, due to considered downgrade processors power, some web pages might have dificulty in loading onto this device and causes the web to be displayed unproperly.
Both notebook and netbook still need 5 steps to surf internet which is
- Waiting for boot > plug in modem > waiting for the modem to synchronise > connect > surf
Smart phones (prefered touchscreen phones)
Recently, handphones technology has growing more and more sophisticated which allow the emergence of new breed of handphones they called smart phones. This phone allow users to surf the net and displays the webpage layout nearly 85% - 90% similarity to which users will get when surfing using computer desktop or laptops. Some smart phone may able to display 100% similarity to what you will get when using computers or laptops. In order to use this device to surf, users just need a data sim cards which need to be inserted into the phone sim slots and select on browser and start surfing. From here we can see that this totally illiminated the problem of space where this device we can just stored in your handphone bag without worrying about the space in your working bags. Beside on space, this also illiminate the speed problem because some pages which the users need to accessed using their phones is already synchronise to be mobile based pages and it loaded very fast yet still include all the information vital to the users search. Finally is the screen size problem, some might think that the phone screen is not enough to give them satisfaction on viewing web contents and here come the touchscreen phone technology where it has bigger screen size and much bigger when it is used in landscape mode. Let us see the summary of this:
- Smart phone (toughscreen phone in particular) illiminate space problem.
- Smart phone (toughscreen phone in particular) illiminate speed problem.
- Cut from 5 steps to 3 steps
- Switch on the phone (a few seconds) > select browser > Surf
For myself, I use nokia 5800 touchscreen phone for my surfing purposes and as my primary phone I use nokia 5310.
